World Champions to defend their title in Quebec.

The South African Elite Women Underwater Hockey Team.
The South African Masters Men and Elite Women Underwater Hockey Teams arrived in Quebec this past weekend to participate in the 20th Underwater Hockey World Championships that start on the 20th and end on the 28th of July.

The SA Elite Ladies, who are sponsored by SpiderTech Tape and Defy, are the defending World Champions after winning Gold in Stellenbosch in 2016. With their coach, Roger Bester, they have worked incredibly hard over the past two years to put up a worthy fight to retain their top spot in the Underwater Hockey World.

The ladies have been using SpiderTech Tape in cases of small injuries as well as for preventing unnecessary strain and for support while training preparing for the World Championships..They will also be using SpiderTech Tape in and out of the pool in Quebec.

The team consists of 7 of the gold medal winners from 2016 and 4 new caps giving them a good blend of experience and fresh hunger. The 4 new caps have all come through the junior structures and have played for the SA U/19 and/or U/23 teams in world championships in the past. New cap Marli Pelser from Pretoria played for the SA U/19 team in 2008 when some of the younger players like Eleanor de Kock and Zandre Coetzee (both U/19 and Elite World Champions) where still playing U/12 field hockey!

The other 3 new caps Tatton Bouras, Jennifer Copinger and Fransesca Wightman where all members of the SA U/23 team that won bronze in Australia in 2017.

New captain Jeanie van der Merwe plays for KZN, but like Marli, she also started her underwater hockey career in Pretoria at Hillcrest and TUKS, introducing the sport to youngsters who are now her team mates.

This year, the majority of the team hails from KZN, with only lady each 1 from Gauteng and Western Cape and 2 from Gauteng North. This made logistics easy since the only heated 3m pool available for training is in Durban and the ladies had to train at that depth for the deep pool in Quebec.

Roxi Walmsley hails from a strong Underwater Hockey presence in SWD that dominated U/19 Ladies hockey for several years while Roxi was U/19 and her mom, Sue, was coached the young ladies.

The team also has two players based abroad - Lauren Dwyer, former KZN player is now based in the UK and Maddie Rive lives in the USA.  Vice captain Julie Borstlap was born in France, but through an underwater hockey romance made South Africa her home. She and husband, Brent (ladies assistant coach and member of the masters men team) put in a lot of work mentoring and helping younger players to grow in the sport.

The ladies kick of their World Championship campaign against host Canada on Friday 20 July at 20h00 (SA time). On Saturday they face the always strong Colombian team in a rematch of the 2016 semi final nail biter in Stellenbosch.

For coach Roger Bester, himself a former SA elite player it will be #justanotherhockeygame as he keeps reminding the ladies, but a repeat gold medal for him will certainly be a feather in his underwater hockey cap as coach.

The games schedule and results are at https://uwhscores.com/t/worlds2018/team/46

As mentioned, the SA Elite Ladies received generous contributions from SpiderTech Tape and Defy. This helped them a lot since they are all amateurs and have to raise the money to prepare for and go to the World Championships, themselves. The stress of fundraising puts a strain on the players and reduces the amount of training camps and preparation that can put in. SpiderTech Tape and Defy certainly gave the ladies a huge boost in this regard.

The Masters Men team contains many years of experience at all levels and the Ou Manne have worked hard to give themselves a good chance to bring back a medal for South Africa.

The team consists of Darren Hanner, Dave Chapman, Willem Zylstra, Dirk Tromp, Nico van der Merwe, Marius Branquinho, Leon van der Merwe, Emile Spies, Brent Borstlap and Jack van Blerk

South Africa did not send a Elite Men's and Masters Ladies team to Quebec mainly due to financial considerations. Despite a lot of interest and many world class players, there was just not enough players that could make the financial commitment to pay their own way to the world championships. The cost of preparing (training camps, etc) and going too Quebec was around R 50 000  per player. As mentioned the players get no financial contribution from the SA Underwater Hockey Federation, Olympic Committee (SASCOC) or Government.

The SA Masters Ladies have had consistent podium finishes at World Championships and we are sure that both the Masters Ladies and Elite Men will be back in full force in 2020.

113 awards of Protea Colours for Esports since 2005 until 2017.

From left to right: Alasdair Donaldson, Charlize Seremak, and Khaliso Malape who were the first recipients of Protea Colours in 2018.
Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) keeps accurate records of all players who have received Regional, Provincial, National, and Protea Colours in all of its disciplines.

With MSSA having made 113 awards of Protea Colours for esports, it means that MSSA has given all such recipients the chance of playing in international competition as well as having afforded all such players the opportunity of proving themselves on an international stage.

It is thanks to MSSA's sponsors, both past and present, that MSSA has been able to manintain a sustainable presence in international competition.

Past sponsors of MSSA's National Teams are: ASUS, ACER, GIGABYTE, MWEB, ROCCAT, ELECTRONIC ARTS, and First National Bank.

MSSA's current sponsors are: TULUNTULU and BOO! Alternative Media Solutions.

However, I digress.

It is interesting to see that 25 clubs have contributed to the award of Protea Colours for the period 2005 to 2017.

However, it is Knights Mind Sports Club (KMSC) that has produced the lion's share of athletes who have been awarded Protea Colours.

It should too be noted that the awards for the 2018 year have not yet been taken into account.

Emperors Palace
When you picture competitive sports, what do you see? Men and women running around a pristine green field, chasing glory for their team? Or a full stadium of screaming fans, showing their support for the best shooters, strategists, and gamers on the planet?
With fans being spoilt for choice, eSports is rapidly becoming the favoured millennial sport worldwide. With tickets to watch live games selling out seats in stadiums faster than other competitive sports, online streams of tournaments gaining hundreds of millions of viewers (some say that viewership of eSports will match viewership of the FIFA World Cup in the near future) and game developers awarding massive cash prizes to the winners, it is easy to see why.
While these developments might come as no surprise to those in Asia, America and Europe, where does this leave Africa?
Eventus International has identified considerable interest in this emerging international phenomenon, and therefore will be hosting the eSports Africa Summit at Emperors Palace from 13-14 August 2018.
As lightning fast fibre rolls out across the continent, standards of living improve and infrastructure becomes more advanced on the continent, Africa will soon take its place amongst the great gaming nations of the world. MSSA announces the Team Captain of the Junior National Squad for the esports title of League of Legends.

Hans Heerden (Helpmekaar Kollege) - Team Captain of the Junior National Squad for the esports title of League of Legends.
Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) has just appointed Hans van Heerden (Helpmekaar Kollege) as the Team Captain of the Junior National Squad for the esports title of League of Legends.
It is not surprising that Helpmekaar Kollege should produce a player of this calibre. The school affiliated to MSSA in 2014, and besides being a loyal andd dedicated member, the school goes the extra mile to develop the sporting skills of its players - just as it does inthe more traditional sports for which the school is famous.

Hans started playing games when he was 8. Having started on an old Atari and his parent's computer (thanks mom and dad!), it was not until four years ago that he discovered gaming PC's. Having been introduced to League of Legends by two of my friends Craig Wilson and Min Woo Kim, Hans quickly joined Helpmekaar Kollege's esport program. Hans was one of the first to join the team and the rest is history.

Hans believes that being in the Junior National Squad will be taxing and a great learning experience. Hands too believes that the lessons that he has been taught by both his parents and school will put him in good stead for the task ahead. Hans believes that the squad, and the teams which will be drawn from the squad, perform to best of their ability. As Hans says, "I believe this team has what it takes and more to tackle any challenge and walk over it with pride".
MSSA believes that Being in the squad will give each player the necessary exposure to achieve their dreams and to become great citizens. MSSA could not be prouder of Hans.

The SA ladies diving down to the puck.
Both the South African Masters Men and Elite Women Underwater Hockey Teams started their Underwater Hockey World Championships campaigns with victories in Quebec on Friday

Both lost their 2nd group games on Saturday and ended the weekend with victories to keep them in strong positions for the play offs.

The SA Masters Men beat New Zealand comprehensively 12-1 and the SA Elite Ladies started the defense of the world championship title with a 2-1 victory over hosts Canada

For the Master Men, Dirk Tromp scored 3 goals, Willem Zykstra and Darren Hanner 2 each and Nico van der Merwe, Marius Branquinho, Brent Borstlap, Emile Spies and Jack van Blerk each scoring a goal.

For the SA Elite Ladies, it was the youngest 2 members of the team that opened the score with Zandre Coetzee breaking the ice and Eleanor de Kock adding the winner. This was a repeat of the 2016 Worlds these 2 youngsters also opened the scoring for SA. Both ladies come from Pretoria although Eleanor currently studies and plays in Johannesburg.

For Zandre, it was her 4th (out of 5) World Championships that she scored the opening goal for her team.

The SA Elite Ladies, who are sponsored by SpiderTech Tape, Defy and Shanahan Engineering, are the defending World Champions after winning Gold in Stellenbosch in 2016 with coach, Roger Bester.

The SA Ladies lost their second against long time rivals Columbia 2-1 in a very hard fought battle. South Africa took an early lead after a penalty goal by Captain Jeanie van der Merwe, but they conceded 2 goals in the 2nd half with the last in the final minutes. A huge effort by the SA ladies in the final minutes could not get them the equalizer they wanted. The SA coaches where not happy that the Colombian ladies got more than 20 stick and glove infringement calls against them without a team warning or players being sent to the sin bin

The game can be watched at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TP57oP1DHZk it includes an interview with SA player, Zandre Coetzee at 47:53.

On Sunday the SA Ladies beat Great Britain 4-3 with Zandre scoring a hat trick and Eleanor scoring the 3rd, making it a good day for the youngest members of the team.

On Monday morning the SA Ladies beat Spain 3-2 in a very physical match with SA Captain Jeanie van der Merwe scoring 2 penalty shots and Eleanor de Kock scoring the final goal. The Spain Ladies are coached by South African Elize Viviers who currently stays in France. Elize is a former SA Elite player and world champion and also former coach of the SA Elite men.

On Monday afternoon, the ladies beat Argentina 10-0 in a festival of goals that saw a hat trick for Roxi Wolmsley and 2 goals for new cap, Marli Pelser.

The ladies are now firmly in second place behind Columbia in group A and with their last game against the Netherlands coming up on Tuesday, they look set to end there barring a major upset.

The standings in both groups are:

Elite Womens - Elite Womens Group A

The SA Ladies then face the winner of the A group 6th seed and B group  3rd seed  (probably Australia) in the playoffs and then most likely New Zealand in the Semi Finals and likely Columbia in the finals if all goes according to plan from here.

The support of Spidertech Tape was very evident with some of the ladies wearing tape for small niggles or for support on joints taking a lot of strain. The Defy and SpiderTech Tape branding also made a appearance on the fins in the pool.

The SA Masters Men won their second game against Columbia 10-1 and they are certainly looking good at this stage. The 10 goals where again evenly spread between most of the players and Leon van der Merwe, who did not score in the opening game, also got 2 in this time.

The SA Masters Men lost 3-2 against France on Saturday in a very tight game with opportunistic scoring from the French making them the better team on the day.

On Sunday evening (SA Time) the Masters Men beat the current World Champions, Australia 4-1 in a very good game and the SA Men certainly made their mark as one of the teams to be reckoned with in this competition.

On Monday the SA Masters men beat Great Britain 4-1 and Argentina 8-1 to leave them in a strong position behind log leaders France. The log standings looks like this:

Sk Gaming ( including 'Loda' seated on the left) with MSSA's ACER Protea Team in 2008 at the Old Edwardian Society, Johannesburg.

Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) has long been in the forefront of esports – not only in South Africa, but in the world.

In South Africa alone, MSSA took the lead by running its first esports competition (in WarCraft) in 1998. I remember it as if it was yesterday.

Some of the milestones achieved by MSSA are:
  • Being the oldest national federation for esports in the world
  • Is purely volunteer run
  • Being a founder member of SASCOC
  • Getting esports recognised as an accredited sport
  • Held the first competitions for females in South Africa
  • Consistently sends national teams overseas since 2005
  • Started inter school championships and competitions in 2010
  • Started the first online league in South Africa in 2005
  • Hosts more LANs in more towns, cities, regions and provinces than any other organisation in each and every year
  • The only organisation that brings out a Calendar of Events out for esports at least 6 months prior to the start of the year
Yet, even with these Herculean steps forward in promoting esports, none of the steps would have been successfully completed without the loyalty, dedication, and resourcefulness of so many of the volunteers and sponsors who have put their hands up over time to serve the growth and development of esports in South Africa.

However, it does not stop here. There is so much more to be done.

Not only are their always new barriers to break, but there is always the day-to-day running to be done.

MSSA today is better and stronger than it has ever been, and intends to remain at the forefront of esports.

The first result is in.

Monnas B (Hoërskool Monument) on receiving their silver medals at MSSA's Free State Championships in June 2018.
Mind Sports South Africa's (MSSA) Online School League is underway.

The league started this week and the following game titles are being played:

  • Counter-Strike: GO
  • DotA 2
  • FIFA '18
  • HearthStone
  • League of Legends
  • StarCraft II
  • Tekken 7
  • VainGlory
The majority of schools participating are from Gauteng and the Western Cape withNorth West and KwaZulu Natal also being represented.

However, the first result received was for Counter-Strike: GO where Hoërskool Monument obtained a shock victory over Protea Heights. Protea Heights is the top ranked school for the league in Counter-Strike: GO, but Protea Height's team was bedevilled by illness.

Parklands College are currently at the top of the official Schools' rankings for Counter-Strike: GO.
With Mind Sports South Africa's (MSSA) Online School League firmly under way and what with MSSA's SA Schools' National  Championships about to be played on 28 and 29 July 2018, it is probably a good time to remind all of the current rankings for the Counter-Strike: GO esports title.

Even though it seems that Parklands College has a commanding lead, a number of schools have been hard at work at developing their skills.

It will therefore be very interesting to see the rankings after both of the above events have concluded.

The current rankings for Schools for the Counter-Strike: GO esports title is:

It is with great pride and much pleasure that the organizers of the First Official Frisian Draughts World Championships welcome all participants, volunteers, the general public and other guests to the city of Ljouwert/Leeuwarden, European Capital of Culture 2018.

The organisers hope that the tournament will become an event that will set the standard for the future, with participants from all over the world, awesome games, new friendships and, of course, new players of the age-old mind sport of Frisian Draughts, the original variant of 100-square draughts that has been played in the province of Fryslân for more than 400 years.

You will be able to follow the games both on Toernooibase (www. toernooibase.kndb.nl) and by live stream on www.frisiandraughts. com.

But of course, visitors are very welcome to come to the historic City Hall in Ljouwert (Hofplein 38, 8911 HJ).

The Orange Room, decorated with paintings of the sovereigns of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, all descended from the Frisian princely House of Nassau-Dietz, will be used as the playing room. A limited number of visitors will be allowed in on condition that they keep quiet.

In the New Room there will be ample opportunity to discuss the various games shown on screen, and to follow the analyses which will be streamed as well. The players will also come to the New Room after finishing their games.

The international players are being housed in Duhoux, a hotelrestaurant in the village of Wurdum/Wirdum (Greate Buorren 4-8, 9088 AE) just south of Ljouwert. This hotel used to be the meeting place of the Frisian Draughts Club in Wurdum, and traditionally the first two rounds of the Frisian Championships were played here.

Without doubt, there will be opportunities to meet the players and other mind sport players there in the evenings.

Mind Sports South Africa's 2018 SA Schools' National Championships were held at Fakkel School of Skills on 28 and 29 July 2018 which proved to be the largest SA Schools' National Championships for many a year.

    At such

    How clubs offer to host.

Hoerskool Parys' League of  Legends team that earned their National High School Colours on 28 July 2018.
On 21 July 2018 Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) invited all members to comment on the draft Calendar of Events for 2019.

Of course a number of member clubs have submitted their views, all of which are being collated and will be discussed by MSSA's Management Committee and the Board Gaming, Card Gaming, Esports and Wargames Boards of Control.

However, it is important to know how MSSA decides where each championship is held.

    Regional Championships:

Regional Championships may be hosted by any member club. Even a club based in a different region may host a Regional Championship in an entirely different region should MSSA's Management Committee approve. Such was the case when the Old Edwardian Mind Sports Club hosted the eThekwini Regional Championship at the Durban Gaming Expo earlier in July 2018.

The rules for hosting an official Regional Championship may be found here.

    Provincial Championships:

Provincial Championships rotate among the member clubs within any such province. Thus only clubs within KwaZulu Natal may host the KwaZulu Natal Provincial Championships. Through actively pursuing this policy, provincial championships are held in various centres which allows clubs to grow their support base and obtain media coverage. Thus, as an example, the KwaZulu Natal Championships in 2018 is being hosted by Empangeni High School on 4 and 5 August 2018.

    National Championships:

National Championships rotate among all member clubs based within South Africa.

As such the prestigious SA National Championships may be held in any city in South Africa. While some gamers may consider such to be inconvenient, it must be remembered that hosting the SA National Championships or the SA Schools' National Championships gives a huge boost to the host club. Such boost to the host club may be felt for many years afterwards in terms of increased membership, particippation and media ccoverage.

However, to host any Regional, Provincial, and/or National Championship, the applicant member club must submit its application to host to the General Secretary by 1 November 2018.

Amanda Kwaza is off to do a site inspection for the venue  for IESF's 10th World Championship - Kaohsuing City, Chinese Taipei.
Ever since the Chinese Taipei Esports Association (CTeSA) won the hosting rights to IESF's 10th World Championships, CTeSA has gone all out to ensure that IESF's 10th World Championships will be the best ever.

Already IESF has done an inspection of the venue, and was suittably impressed.

Thus IESF's 10th World Championship is expected to be the greatest Esports World Championship in size and scale in comparison to all former events.

The venue in which the Esports World Championship will be held is none other than the Kaohsiung Arena. The Kaohsiung Arena has previously hosted many other sporting events.
    Kaohsiung Arena

The stadium has the capacity of 15,000 seats, and has the history of holding the 2017 League of Legends Rift Rivals Series in 2017, as well as playing host to the World Games in 2009.

As part of the preparations for such world championships, CTeSA has now invited the Presidents of all the National Federations, of which Mind Sports South Africa is just one such member, that have successfully completed their first entry to inspect the venue as well as the hotels at which the teams are to be accommodated.

Part of the experience will also be that the presidents of such national federations will be able to experience the incredible TESL (Esports League).

At such event, it is expected that Amanda will also meet the professional esports team 'Flash Wolves'.

Amanda's trip will be of great help to the National Team Manager in planning the team's stay at IESF's 10th World Championships.

However, it is not all pleasure, there is a hectic schedule planned, and Amanda will be thrust into the limelight as she has to deal with all her peers from the rest of the world.
